In Slovenia, a municipality (občina) is the primary local administrative unit. There are 210 of them, 11 of which have a special "urban" status with additional autonomy. Municipal services or city services refer to basic services that residents of a city expect the municipal government to provide. Basic city services managed by the City of Celje refer to spatial planning, environment protection, traffic, real estate management, property management, building land management, construction and maintenance of public utilities, family and social assistance, education and research, primary health care, culture, sport, tourism, agriculture and other services which provide conditions for the overall economic and social development of the city.

The Municipality of Celje is governed by a Mayor and the City Council. The Mayor of Celje is Bojan Šrot, who has successfully led the city since 1998. He is also the chairman of Slovene Peoples Party. The City Council has 33 counsellors from 10 different political parties and independent lists.

The coat of arms of Celje is based on the coat of arms of the Counts of Celje, an ambitious and successful dynasty, which constantly increased its wealth, influence and authority with skilful politics and marriage alliances. The coat of arms has a blue background and three six-pointed golden stars. The flag of Celje features the traditional colors of the coat of arms - blue and yellow with municipal coat of arms in the middle.

Celje celebrates the municipal holiday on April 11, in memory of the day when the Count of Celje Frederick II at the request of "all the citizens of our Celje" granted Celje in 1451 the city rights, thus completing and upgrading the previously existing town status.
