The Gallery of Young People's Art Works

The city of Celje is situated at the confluence of the Savinja and the Voglajna rivers in the central region of Slovenia. Its stirring history was marked most by the Counts of Celje, since 1436 the Princes of Celje, who inherited the castle building from the Vovbržani in the first half of 14th century. Despite of the early death of the last Prince Ulrik II in 1456, who had no descendants, they had a significant impact on the world's history, and their residence, the Old Castle of Celje, has been preserved until recent times. On 11th April 1451 the city of Celje was granted the city rights by the mighty Friderik II. In one part of the castle there was (2000 – 2005) the only permanent art gallery in Slovenia dedicated to art creativity of children and young people, called The Gallery of Children's Art Works Old Castle Celje. In 2006 the gallery moved to the old city centre and was renamed The Gallery of Young People’s Art Works Celje. The first gallery for children and young people in Slovenia was founded by Mihailo Lišanin supported by the Municipality of Celje.

The Gallery of Young People's Art Works Celje is the only permanent gallery in Slovenia earmarked for young artists up to the age of 20 from all over the world. It is also the only private gallery in Europe, with the only private international competition for art works of young artists in the world from the year 1995 onwards.
The competition, according to the number of participating countries in one year and until now (45 / 85), is one of the ten largest in the world. The collection of art works on the theme "The Horse" includes 45,000 art works from 55 countries and is the largest collection of the sort. There are more than 120,000 art works from 85 countries in the gallery archives.
During this period we have set up 180 exhibitions (70 of them abroad) in 26 countries all over the world (France, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Belarus, Indonesia, USA, Turkey, Argentina, Russia, Bulgaria, Italy, Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, India, Iran, Moldova, Romania, Cyprus and Slovenia).
Each month a new exhibition is set up in the gallery. The exhibitions of individual schools are opened by the mayors of their cities and the exhibitions from foreign countries are opened by their ambassadors in Slovenia. Since the year 2000 we have collected all the articles, TV and radio shows about the gallery and its founder. There are over 1000 newspaper articles in 30 languages and 100 TV and radio shows from 15 countries.

"THE WORLD OF ART" magazine was founded in 1995 and is designed for children, young artists and academic artists. It contains information about exhibitions, results, international competitions and other galleries, ex-tempore of painting, sculpturing, graphics and photography. Its readers can be found in 26 countries on all continents. It is sent to many art schools in developing countries for free as a small contribution to their art knowledge and development. In this way, young people in those countries are given an equal opportunity for participating in international competitions and to be awarded for the participating artworks. The magazine represents their window to the world of art and young artists of other countries.

From the year 2002 onwards, Mihailo Lišanin annually invites academic authors who take part in creating graphic art works at the “International graphic art works workshop” on the theme of “The Architecture of Celje and Old Castle Celje”. This is the only international graphic arts workshop in Slovenia. In eight years 150 graphic art works were created on the theme by 29 authors from Croatia, Slovakia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Belarus, Hungary and Slovenia. These art works represent their first encounter with Celje and its architecture. Barbara of Celje, Mighty Friderick, Old Castle Celje, St. Joseph’s church, The Narodni dom, The Celjski dom and the rest of the streets and buildings architecture in Celje is represented on the graphic art works.

As the author of the projects “International competition of young people’s art works”, “International graphic arts workshop” and as the founder of the Gallery of Young People’s Art Works Celje (previously Old Castle Celje) and The World of Art magazine, Mihailo Lišanin received many international awards and acclamations for his work in the field of art culture and for promoting artistic creativity and culture of young people.  Among them are “The golden key of an honorary guest of Villa Constitucion, Argentina”, “Unique plate of the Turkish Ministry of Education”, “Remembrance medal of the Russian Ministry of Culture”, “The medal of honorary guest of Montana, Bulgaria”, “The honorary guest of Bangalore in India” and is also a honorary member of international juries at international young people’s art works competitions in Gaziantep, Turkey and Minsk, Belarus. In Slovenia, he received the “Bronze Shield of the Municipality of Celje”.
